The EDL's attempt to target the Muslim community of Bradford is part of its plans to "hit" major multiracial, Bradford leafletmulticultural cities over the summer - a plan exposed by the Guardian newspaper. The EDL want to provoke a race riot. Their message boards refer to their planned Bradford demonstration as "the Big One".

UAF is working with local organisations to stage a counter-protest, showing unity across our community against the EDL's attempts to divide us.

UAF is supporting a We Are Bradford event, emphasising unity across all sections of the community on Saturday 28 August, in opposition to the English Defence League, which wants to bring violence and racism to Bradford.

Transport from Greater Manchester is being arranged. Details to follow.

Statement in Response to Claims by Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) Concerning UAF’s Demonstration Against the English Defence League (EDL) in Bolton, 20th March 2010

The Lancashire Division of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) voted at its 26th March 2010 AGM to write to the GMPA to put on record their concern at police tactics used against supporters of UAF in Bolton on 20th March 2010. The NUT’s letter criticises the police for using riot squads to ‘grab and hustle off’ UAF speakers and for preventing citizens of Bolton from joining the UAF protest against the EDL.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon aka "Tommy Robinson"

The identity of the English Defence League's self-styled leader who uses the pseudonym "Tommy Robinson" has been exposed as one Stephen Yaxley-Lennon from Wilstead, near Bedford. He is a former BNP member with a criminal conviction for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.  He assaulted a neighbour--an off duty policeman who intervened in a drunken domestic row between Yaxley-Lennon and his partner, Jenna Vowles, who is also a BNP member. He served a year in prison in 2005.

As blogger Bartholomew's Notes points out, a YouTube video uploaded as far back as October 2009 by another EDL member involved in a bitter internal dispute with Yaxley-Lennon shows a series of stills of Yaxley-Lennon's unmasked face over a soundtrack of him speaking at a press conference. The text accompanying the clip said: "hey its steven yaxley.....".

Photo of east London demo

Around 5,000 people marched through the East End of London last Sunday in a huge show of unity and defiance against racism and fascism.

The demonstration organised by UAF and United East End was orginally called as a counter-protest against the racist English Defence League, which has links with the British National Party and other fascist groups – but the racists abandoned their plans to come to Tower Hamlets as the scale of opposition to them became clear.

There was a great turnout on today’s antiracist demo anyway, with marchers determined to show that racism and fascism are not welcome in the East End. Large numbers of local young people were joined by trade unionists and people from every part of the area’s diverse population in an exuberant demonstration.
