2.  The Story of Gad Beck

In advance of Holocaust Memorial Day 27/1/10

On Sunday 24th January the Lesbian & Gay Foundation in partnership with Keshet Manchester will be showing:

THE STORY OF GAD BECK – A DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT AN OPENLY GAY WITNESS OF NAZI-GERMANY

Gad Beck was ten years old when the Nazis came to power and 19 when his great love Manfred Lewin was deported and killed in Auschwitz.

Gad and his twin sister Miriam were interned at Rosenstrasse camp in the centre of Berlin in 1943 but set free again after unique street protests by non-Jewish relatives and friends.

As leader of the underground group “Chug Chaluzi” Gad Beck helped to organize the survival of many Jews in Berlin during the last two years of World War II until he and his friends were finally caught.

In the film Gad Beck speaks about his sexuality in a charmingly provocative way. Rather than having suffered from the prosecution of gays and lesbians in Nazi-Germany Gad Beck believes his homosexuality has given him the strength and power to go into resistance and organize his own and other people’s survival.

The film is a plea to acknowledge the complexities and contradictions of life. The material presented and the questions raised are also open to discussion and interpretation.

After the film presentation we will be reflecting on what the film has shown us. There will be an opportunity to share our own stories about how homophobia has affected us and discuss how far we have come, reflecting on current attitudes around the world to LGB & T people and reflect on our lives now.
